There isnt any science about it bro, I run two filters in my setup so I can service one of them and replace the whole media in it to totally new media without any problem at all because the other filter is mature and working so my tank keeps in good conditions always.
If you only have one canister then what you must do is to "seed" the new media when you replace it by leaving some of the mature media that has been already running, at the time you change the ceramic rings just rinse some of the media you keep along to the ceramic rings, for example if your canister has some ceramic rings and floss pads, so what you should do if you want to replace all the ceramic rings is to rinse the floss pads with the very same acuarium water in a bucket and reuse them along to the new media, the floss pads that have been running still contain enough bacteria to seed the new media you cast on your canister and thats's it.

Thanks for your help. I'm going to switch to K1 in my Rena. Luckily its not my only filter, I also have an AC110 and a Hydor 5 sponge filter.
As per the other thread, I'm going to double the sponge in the ac110. I have great filtration now, but it can always be better.

I have a moving bed full of K1, so am a fan. I wouldn't bother in a cannister because it is expensive. I would compress pot scrubbers. Real cheap, large surface area and also won't clog.

K1 is expensive but in the long run turns out cheaper because it doesnt clog you just only need to rise it every once in a while and it lasts forever, so as I said ends up being cheaper.
