My research has led me to consider "eheim substrat pro" or "seachem matrix". I decided to give matrix a try and am currently in the process of cycling it into my filtration "infrastructure". Prior to this, I have used eheim substrat (the original, not the pro) for the last 11 years. The original eheim substrat proved to be an awesome biological filtration media. I am moving to matrix, however, because I need to (at least attempt) address "nitrates". I am also using purigen, along with the matrix.

X2 on the ehiem stuff..i have also used these with good success in my other tanks.
 
well i just got and Fx5 and i put all three trays as scrubbies... Should i change it up? I also would like to do the purigen but then i wouldnt want it to become full and the ammonia sky rocket...
 
Sintered glass:Porous glass made by sintering powdered glass, used for filtration of precipitates in gravimetric analysis.

Sintering: is a method for making objects from powder, by heating the material in a sintering furnace below its melting point (solid state sintering) until its particles adhere to each other. Sintering is traditionally used for manufacturing ceramic objects, and has also found uses in such fields as powder metallurgy.

It is what ehiem substrate is made from and i think sechem matrix and stuff probably is too.

Personally, I think that as long as any of them work, then it doesn't really matter. I currently use Biomax, Eheim Substrat Pro, and JBJ Cermanic Rings. All in different tanks. And I honestly can't say anything bad. Tanks are running fine, fish are thriving, tank is clean...the end.
 
I found a huge discussion on this in another post here somewhere but cant find it !!! I'm just trying the pot scrubbers as pre filter media and loaded all the spare space in my sump with shower body scrubbers (havnt found the pvc round scrubbers yet). I get packs of 6 from the $2 shop where I live! Only been a few weeks so cant really comment on results yet.
