Howdy,

I use Eheim Substrat Pro
Surface area 450 sqm/litre (20,000 sqf/gal)

The best thing is: I heard about it at MFK :woot:

I guess more to the point of my question, do bio-balls support beneficial bacteria being totally submerged? What is the best bio material if it will be totally submerged? Gravel, something porous???

yes, bio balls are still effective even if they are submerged.

your till better off with nylon pot scrubbers

metal isnt a very good bio-medium

It also has great potential to harm invertebrates in your tank

If you have money to blow, go with the Eheim substrat, if you are on a budget get lava rock.
IMO it's more a question of space. Substrat Pro has a significantly higher surface area. You can reach the same effect with lava rock, but you will need a bit more. Considering the limited space in my canister, Substrat Pro is simply more effective. If you run a big filter on a small tank, then lava is the better deal.
