Best Bio-Meida submerged or wet/dry

I use Eheim Substrat Pro
Surface area 450 sqm/litre (20,000 sqf/gal)

The best thing is: I heard about it at MFK

i have rena XP series and all of them use Eheim Substrat Pro ...

if you want cheap bio... go to your local hardware store such as Home Depot and get Lava Rocks!! those works well too!!!

you must be thinking salt water which is not ok to use copper material. fw will work fine buddy. get more bang for your bucks.

I guess more to the point of my question, do bio-balls support beneficial bacteria being totally submerged? What is the best bio material if it will be totally submerged? Gravel, something porous???

yes, bio balls are still effective even if they are submerged.

If you have money to blow, go with the Eheim substrat, if you are on a budget get lava rock.

IMO it's more a question of space. Substrat Pro has a significantly higher surface area. You can reach the same effect with lava rock, but you will need a bit more. Considering the limited space in my canister, Substrat Pro is simply more effective. If you run a big filter on a small tank, then lava is the better deal.
