my personal recommendations are:

wet/dry environment such as sump or biotower situations, either bioballz cubesor other shaped things designed to let water pass over every bit of them at any angle there set in

enclosed pressurized or low oxygen envirobnment, ceramic noodles etc. i believ thees do well as you can fit many and they are small

most people who own canisters dont like biballs that are 35mm plus

Ehiems Ehfisubstrat Pro and Seachems Matrix which are both sintered glass spherical shaped media are considered the premium type of biomedia for the type of filters you have. Both have surface areas in excess of 450/m2 per liter.
