Best bottom feeder for my stock?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
About 3-5 more clown loaches would be a good start (schooling fish are generally best kept in schools...).

Not sure what I'm going to do. Kind of just want a larger "cleanup crew" I hate how food sits on the bottom of the tank. With the corys its gone in an instant! I saw at petsmart some like 3"-4" cory cats. Not sure what kind but they were awesome! So cool looking! Was gonna buy some but they were like $15 and I think that's pretty high. Any large cory cats?

There is a very easy and effective solution to this problem: not overfeeding. :grinno:

But anyway, regarding cories, the largest species listed on PlanetCatfish.com are C. robustus at 3.5" and C. haraldschultzi at 3.3". Then there's also Scleromystax barbatus (not technically a cory, but very similar), which gets to almost 5" (although PC has them listed at 3.7" for some reason).

Clown loaches, in a proper school, would be a "good clean up crew"

the problem with clown loaches are that they are slow growing...say both fish start at 2"; by the time oscar is at 8 inches, the clown is maybe at 3 and looking wormy and food like.

Get a feather fin Syno cat; tough but rather unassuming; good with oscars.

I say go with a couple raphael cats. A little reclusive but they clean up pretty effectively. Clown loaches are definitely the best IMHO, but as was already brought up they just grow too slow.

Ya my lfs has a 4 inch Rafael cat. I can grow out all of these catfish in my 55. I am building a 400+ gallon fish tank.

Good luck with that build Andrew. And like the other guys advised in your build thread, just think about heating costs ahead of time. Planning is the name of the game. It will be awesome.
