X2 why destroy water quality when you can keep good water quality and achieve the same thingTbh most bulbs come with spectra that are supposed to deter algae growth, but usually as the bulb ages the spectrum changes and becomes more favorable for algae growth.
So my answer would be an old bulb.
But if you just want to feed african cichlids I'd just buy an appropriate food instead of trying to achieve poorer water quality and algae growth.

I do to. I have a Rubbermaid tub in my backyard and I put rocks and driftwood in it for a month or two to get a layer of algae and aufwuchs built up on it and then ill put it in the tank. Plecos love it and it looks good.
