BEST CANISTER FILTER or Fix FX5?

Nice setup :) My tank is a 220 gallon View attachment 991368

Wow 220 gallon, Someday! I think a WET/DRY system is the BEST! Reason being you have a large amount of space and options in sump for Bio media!
I would add a sump like most stated here.

Best of luck.

What other issues are you running into with your fx5?

As for removing trapped air, try to remove the hoses from contact with the aquarium. This will cancel the siphon and remove trapped air inside them. Make sure you drain all water thats left in the hoses. Also, if you're using filter floss as media, id recommend to check these out as they can cause some air buildup inside the canister. I've had this issue just last week after my water change (since i turn them off for maintenance). Just have to make sure that no air is trapped anywhere where water flows between the canister and the tank.

Also, forgot to mention to check the motor and impeller assembly and give it a good clean :)

So i just took part my Fx5 and I replaced all the bolts and nuts holding the motor in place, as one was stripped. Possible air could get in there if it wasn't sealed fully this whole time?
I learned a trick online using teflon tape around the top cover thus holding the seal in place and even aiding in sealing. No filter floss took that all out a while back. and top basket is empty allowing more flow. No lines kinked or slack really everything is tight and together properly. Guess i will wait a day or so and see what happens.
Thanks for all your help tho guys. I am still considering a sump tho, How big would it have to be for a 220 and what is a recommended return pump size ?

I would say 36x14x15 with double overflow hoses, And a 1000 gph water pump.

GoodLuck

You both have gorgeous tanks. As far as best canister you'll find that's a very subjective thing and will vary from person to person, the same goes for kinds of filtration. I believe it's generally accepted though that Wet/Dry and Fluidized Bed Filters are the best as far as biological and Canisters are the best Mechanical filtration. At least that's my understanding. My personal preference would be to run an FX5/6 as a prefilter for a Fluidized bed filter and try to get the best of both worlds and another FX5/6 acting as a prefilter for a high wattage UV sterilizer. Overkill and expensive yes but the set-up would have it's advantages.
