Best canister filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I own fluval and eheim also.....
I am guessing that making a statement like this you have some kind of first hand experience?
I was not impressed with the fx5 at all, ended up trading it.
OP have you considered a sump?

No experience with SunSun. Just a lot of troubles reported with leaking, flimsy parts etc. I will state that being from Canada, the Eheim are very expensive here. I use the Filstars on medium sized tanks. Curious as to your dislike with the FX5?

Then grab a pair of 2262 one on each 75g for now. Prob need to valve it back a bit but they come with the valves to do so. 2 2262 would filter a 300g very well also. If you do some research you will find there are people who have had their classics running 20+ years. Simple tried and true filtration. Only downside is the 2262 doesnt come with media like the other classics and filling that 5g bucket can get expensive

Expensive in this hobby is a given of you want healthy fish, or so it seems.
What filter media do you run?

It gave me nothing but trouble. Leaked from the bottom drain. About half of lock down nuts broke at the cheap plastic connector on bottom. And always had flow lose issues. Cleaned every month. Had it on a rift lake tank with professional sump and fluval 305. It was the worst performing of the group. Ended up trading it for 2 ac110s and some cash.,
I do like my eheim pro 3 tho, it is on the tank in the bedroom where being quiet is of the utmost importance.
I love variety every filter has a niche, there is no "best filter ". There are categories that different filters are better at. It is all about what you are looking for.

Plus I am currently sitting on 7 tanks, and have 3 more not setup. Lol
We will be removing the two smallest tanks or using 1 of them as a quarentine or hospital tank.

Noise isnt really a problem since these tanks will be in the front room of the house but that being said I don't want crazy loud. Really just going for best variety of media and cleanest water with best flow. Water changes will still be frequent but anything helps for when we go away on vacation.

Im using eheim classic 2260..great build, hold lots of media, if pump goes to hell you can replace just that instead whole head (like eheim pro series and other such canisters).. great flow through media.. all i can say is thats the best canister i have ever used :)

:iagree:

Its versatile in my set up I'm running about 10 lbs of ceramic /glass noodles topped off with poret foam cut to fit..easy to clean just rinse and reassemble..

Canister: Eheim classic series

HOB: AC110, or Emperor 400 (But they are not as good as they use to be IMO)
