OK I have a 180 gallon. My fx5 has a TINY TINY TINY leak somewhere. Spitting out micro bubbles like no other. Im done trying to fix it. What is the best canister for preformance and price out there ?

Id like to only run one canister and maybe a HOB together. I dont really want to go buy a new fx5. Ive allways considerd a sump. are they quiet ? my tank is NOT drilled.

If ur fx5 is within 3 years new they will replace it! And the micro bubbles 97% of the time are from dirty mech/bio media and sometimes the hoses get gunky and that makes the water turbulant thus bubbles.

I run fx5 and ac110 on my 90, my ac110 is filled with filter pad and fx5 all bio. Works great never had a prob

x2.

I would see about getting it replaced first before going out & buying a new filter. I like sumps a lot since they give you a ton of room for media as well as a place to hide most of your equipment, but they can be kind of loud unless you're good at fabricating your own overflows & such (really just a bunch of pipe & fittings).

For a single cannister on a 180g other then an FX5 you going to have to look at eheims, though quire pricey. I don't have any suggestions on which model but there are plenty eheim fanatics out there taht will chime in.

Personally I wound alter the media in your fx5 as it is likely the cause of the micro bubbles.

I did not know about the hoses... I Will have to give it all a good clean out today. I was looking into sumps, my tank isnt drilled. It would make the tank look nicer without a bunch of crap in there. Also about the same price as canisters... Im going to try cleaning it again. The tubes included this time.

Eheim fanatic here...eheim 2262 offers 3 time the media capacity but at twice the cost of fx5. You can get smaller pro 3s but I think 2262 is the best for the buck(twice the cost if you fill it with eheim stuff).

also 2262 needs very little mantainance...a bit less than fx5.

The draw back is the flow rate is not as good as two fx, but I have not found that to be a problem.

there are ways to make a sump quiet. most of the noise comes from the overflow and the return pump. both problems can be minimized and my current sump is a lot quieter than in the past.
drilling glass is not that hard and acrylic is easy to drill. you can make a sump out of a used tank and some glass for partitions so it can be done cheap.

good luck

Eheim 2080 Pro3 is a fantastic filter and is often compared to the FX5. I have read that the flow rate on the eheim with media is 71% of stated flow rate and fx5 51%. Generally flow rates are measured without media. Unfortunatly the eheim is about twice the price.

Both great filters and unbeatable features!
