Decided to scrap my plans for an rtc and the massive tank I was planning because I am going to start motocross again next year and won't have time to maintain a tank that size, so what is a good catfish for that footprint and any ideas on good tank mates will be good as well.

IMO, the max length of the cat would have to be no more than 1.5'. If you like movement, a nice school/group of adult sun cats is a sight to see. Lima shovelnose group can be ok for a long, long time and also looks striking. Bullheads would work too. Tawny Dragon Catfish too. IMO, a really cool cat would be from the Aguarunichthys genus: http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/genus.php?genus_id=203#1177

@TBTB thanks you always give really good advice but I would prefer something more interactive, kind of a "wet pet" I really like L.pictus but I'm they are mega rare in the uk, do you think 1 of them could be comfortable in that size tank?

Here is an already big one but expensive - 200 pounds http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=38861#p265757

IMHO it will not be comfortable in a 3' wide tank - not only it grows over 2' but it's maxillary barbels span well over 3' which will make this fish nervous, skittish, flighty as it will feel trapped when both barbels will come in touch with the front and the back glass.

IME bullheads are highly intelligent, fearless, and interactive AND you don't need to heat the tank. Almost as hardy as the fish get. Among them, I'd consider first a speckled bullhead Ameiurus serracanthus - http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=1089 - IMHO the prettiest of them and they max out around 1.5' total length. They do gain quite a girth so at 1.5' they look like a true monster fish.
