You are 100% right on that one I was running 4 little eheim compact 5000 lph and the heaters were on more I have now swapped to 2 x big 18,000 lph pumps and 1 compact 5000 the heaters are on much less
My tank stays at a nice 84 all year around with no problems the tank is insulated so is the sump but the tank is in a outdoor wooden shed
With heating I think it all depends on how much you are willing to pay on it if you are happy with you bills leave it alone if they are to much then look at ways of cutting costs but nothing is free its going to be more expencive to heat a 1000 gal than a 100 gal no matter what you do
I think it's best to keep it simple all this plumbing in to house heating could be more hassle than it's worth say your heating goes that's not something most fishkeepers can fix on there own but changing a few heaters in a sump or a themostat nearly all fish keepers can do
