Depending on how big your sump pump is, it should also make some heat (provided its the submersible type of course). What if you completely insulated the sump and crank up the heaters in the sump?

You are 100% right on that one I was running 4 little eheim compact 5000 lph and the heaters were on more I have now swapped to 2 x big 18,000 lph pumps and 1 compact 5000 the heaters are on much less

My tank stays at a nice 84 all year around with no problems the tank is insulated so is the sump but the tank is in a outdoor wooden shed

With heating I think it all depends on how much you are willing to pay on it if you are happy with you bills leave it alone if they are to much then look at ways of cutting costs but nothing is free its going to be more expencive to heat a 1000 gal than a 100 gal no matter what you do

I think it's best to keep it simple all this plumbing in to house heating could be more hassle than it's worth say your heating goes that's not something most fishkeepers can fix on there own but changing a few heaters in a sump or a themostat nearly all fish keepers can do

The sump is a 4x8 pond. Its a 2x4 shell and I think I used 2" pink styro after the wood then the liner lays on the styro. Styro lids on the pond all but a few hours a day. Not gonna be able to insulate it any better then it already is. I knew the room where it's at had no heat when I built it. IF I can hit 84 (without a hot drip) off 3 250 watters in an unheated portion of the basement here in Iowa in the middle of winter. I think that says a bit about the insulating job.

If anyone here thinks putting insulation on the back of 1" of solid acrylic is gonna help insulate it I could give it a go, but I'm not sure it would.

My landlord is a foreman for a construction company and does regular inspections on the house so tapping into the hot water heater isn't exactly something I could just "hide".

We'll see how heating goes with typical heaters. Had no idea it was so easy to get Stealth heaters replaced. Just took 7 in to various Petsmarts and ended up with 3 300 watt Fluvals and 4 250 watt aquaeons.

Heaters upset the balance of the house's electrical. Gonna have to run a new circuit for the heaters as now IF I run the big wet/dry pump it trips the breaker. Works fine without that pump on. Might have pump issues.

One things for sure...... IF it's not one thing it's another. :( I bet it would be a funny read to compile all the issues I'm encountering with this tank.
