I think good water quality is what gets the best results, not saying you have poor water. For food currently in feeding mostly NLS and also some New Era pellets. They eat the NLS but it looks like I'm making them eat broccoli (not that I don't like broccoli, but you get the point). I know they are very high quality but honestly I want to find something that they love as much as my old bleekeri loved the New Era pellets...

I personally use nls jumbo fish or the regular variety if smaller. My jag strictly eats the jumbo formula at 9" std. Not that I'm against other foods, but after researching through threads etc. I think its the best food for my fish.
Northfin appears to be good as well. Honestly genetics and water quality will dictate how your fish look more than food. Theres a big atheistic difference between a F1 etc from a well respected breeder and your average Joe bought from the local pet store.

I mostly feed hikari gold, some dried krill, and once in a while raw shrimp or tilapia. I can say that real plants and natural sunlight really made my midas, jag, green terror and jack color up. But now I only buy fish that show potential. No show, no go!

Color and growth depends on lotsa things. Stress inhibits both for sure. And keep in mind, people posting photos on MFK have some AWESOME fish. They only say "hey, look at my awesome fish". They don't tell you it's 3 years old, they started out with 5, it's the 2nd or 3rd one they've had, it lives alone in a big tank with no competition, etc.

PYRU hit the nail on the head with genetics and water quality. My fishes main staple is Hikari Gold pellets and I feed them Omega one flakes every other day. Just feed them a variety of good quality food that they will consume and stay away from fish food with fillers. All food mentioned in this post are good foods and it will just depend if your fish will eat them. I would stay away from live food since some don't have good nutrition and chances of introducing diseases into your tank is greater.
