Sorry but there are far too many cichlids to choose a "best". My favorites is the veija argentea, paratilapia polleni(not SA/CA) and the trimac.

lol @ the world's most popular cichlid and definition of a wet pet only getting two votes so far.

This is because you are on a forum of experienced and educated fishkeepers. Oscars are an entry level fish, that most here have had experience of keeping. Because of this MFKers don't see oscars as anything special and most find them boring and far too common.

We get that you like them, but why is it that you feel insulted that they are not everyone's favorite fish. Are you not secure with your choosing of Oscars as your favorite fish and really feel it needs defending? :duh:

Entry level fish? Common? When did hipsters take over the fishkeeping hobby? Sorry they dont satisfy your need for the latest greatest gimmick. "Ooh, I had oscars before they were mainstream..."

Yeah the Oscar lovers can be a tough group of hobbiests and very loyal to there favorite fish and thats cool. To each his own. If I had to say my least favorite fish the Oscar would be right there at the top of my list but I respect those that like them, just not for me. At the moment my favorite fish is my Sataneperca Maps. Very graceful and just really set off the tank in my Living room. This is really subjective because my favorite fish is always changing.

Not sure it would be my least favorite fish, but probably the fish I would give the least consideration to owning again. Yes, I had Oscars over 30 years ago, when I was a kid. So no way I will ever own another, way to many cool, hip, gimmick fish to stock my tank with  :duh:

I think O.M. has gotten his definitions of "common" and "popular" mixed up.

Holy crap, you must really be old then....cause Oscars were "mainstream" 30 years ago

The Best Cichlid to own would have to be a pair of Full Grown jaguars in their prime!

And as far Oscars go, I hate them:irked:....they move slow, eat slow, look slow, grow slow, they're just slow! But to each his own:ROFL:.. I'd rather have a pair of convicts than a a pair of oscars.
