my 29 gets about 3 hours of indirect sunlight from my bed room window a day so i had a lot of algae in that tank and mostly on one side of the tank that gets the most light. so i figured i would get something to eat it.

so, some one had brought a little placo in to petco, so i got it for free and put him in my tank and he didn't clean any thing, then he died.

so i got a little snail and it cleaned a little then crawled on to the intake on my filter and got his head stuck and died.

so i got 3 little otocinclus and iv had them for 2 weeks now and my tank is spotless iv been crunching up algae discs and putting them on my plants for them to suck off, which seems to be keeping them feed, these guys are crazy, iv never seen anything soo small eat so much. i love these guys.

not monsters but they eat enough to be.

I had no idea what an otocinclus was so I had to look it up. This site has a little info about them. I'll have to keep an eye out for some. I have tried plecos for my outdoor tanks and ponds. Plecos do not earn their keep by eating algae; I don't know how they got that reputation.

Most of your fish would devour these little snacks :)

I have had them before and they do a good job of cleaning algae but they also do a good job of eating slime coat.:irked:

i dont kno why other people have problems with plecos not eating algea. thats what they do, my tanks are spotless n i never feed them bastards. they eat algea n any left over food in the tank. i NEVER specificially feed my plecos. wether it be a gold nugget or a common. they eat algea, wether they choose to or not.

I would also agree that a properly cared for pleco does not eat algae much (if any).

Umm ethnics you need to learn more about your fish. Many plecos arent algae eaters. Your Gold Nugget for example WILL NOT eat algae. They are in fact little miny preds and would prefer to eat worms and the such. I hope you enjoy slowly starving your fish to death.

my pleco keeps my glass spotless! However the bottom is covered with river rock that is getting some good algae growth on it. I dont mind really it actually looks pretty good right now....... actually thats just what i tell myself since I know that there is nothing i can do about it......

ethnics you obviosuly know very little about the fish. If fed properly even many of the "algae eaters" dont eat much algae. Not all panaques will, not all commons will, not all bristlenose will. There are more plecs that favour a carnivore based diet than other wise. Not feeding your plecs specifically is not recommendable, and they wouldn't survive very well on just algae, particularly the gold nugget. Either your fish are still small, or you seriously overfeed your other fish and therefore they get a lot of scraps. GNs are big protein hunters, not much of that in algae.

But enough of that, i agree otos are great algae eaters, and are constant eaters. A few different nice species too.
