my albino senegal at 3 inches has taken down feeders 1.5 inches long.
only to have it snatched away by the lap.

That's because you feed it.....feeders! If you get them eating other foods, they begin to learn. I have a 8-9" sen and 14" ornate, and half of their tankmates could fit in their mouths (specifically the ornate). They have never made an aggressive move. One fish was eaten (by the ornate), but I am 99% sure it was dead beforehand. Mine have never been given feeders. I'm obviously not relating this to all polys, but refering specifically to sens.

They are, but they do just fine in warm water as well. I mean think about it, people put them in ponds. I've seen them live for YEARS in the same water as tropicals.

If you can get a rope fish they are relatively peaceful. I give my clown knife feeders sometimes and my rope fish never even pays any attention to them.

i have a goldfish that was accidently put in a bag with my feeders, and i have had him for about a year now in a tropical tank. he was about 1 inch long and very thin when i got him, no hes about 7 inches and hes fat! but he does just fine in my little tropical tank
