Best eel to get

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
TT's have the personality of the fire eels w/ abit more "rough and tumble" attitude. They get close to fire eel size. But i've never personally seen one bigger. TT's do also have more of an appetite for fish, but w/ a fire eel you'll need to get frozen bloodworms/earthworms to suppliment it's diet IF you can get it on shrimp pellets or similarly prepared foods. My fire eel still refuses anything but frozen bloodworms or earthworms after a few months. I've tried frozen krill and freeze dried foods which all get refused. on occasion he takes frozen beefheart. personally I have found fire eels hearty once established but delicate when first introduced. and have heard similar responses from other people. TT's imo are the heartier of the 2. If i wasn't afraid of world war 3 I'de get a TT myself. My fire eel has no competition for food and is still not a very aggresive eater. Your oscar may out-compete it for food as well. A TT can be downright vorascious in my experiance, and take to most any food.

The only other concern would be your PH. most eels like moderately low PH, and water quality. They are suseptible to bacterial infection from their scaleless nature, ect,ect...

spiney or peacock eels are of course the smaller side and as you know perfectly acceptable as well :naughty:

Tire tracks are awesome fish. But you would need a bigger tank. I had to give my 2' plus one to someone else when I had to down grade to a 72g. I miss him tons he was so chill and friendly. the one I traded him for (who is only around 15") is very personable with me, but he can be much more agressive then my other guy ever was. My leaf fish asks for it, but it's hard to watch when he grabs and head shakes him.

There's a tarykian (I know I'm spelling that wrong) one of those cichlid lakes spiney eel thats looks sweet. I think they get around the foot mark.

here's a pic.

if your going to get a big tank and i mean big then i would definitely go with a fire eel.My fire eel is my favorite of all my fish.He eats from my hand and is great with so many kinds of fish.He is now in a 450 gallon tank,30 inches plus and as big around as a strong guys arm:}.

i have both a fire eel and tire track, the TT is much more aggressive and wont hand feed, he prefers to hunt, the fire eel is much more peaceful and comes to my hand for food as soon as i open the lid

I like both fire eels and tire track eels, I'd had them both and managed to have them greet me whenever I lifted the lid on the tank, they both would let me pet them! (You can see my tire eel in my photo album.
