ANYTHING will work, as long as you have enough BIO-MEDIA capacity. Aquaclears are my fav HOB for that reason, but even I use a few Aqueons/Emporers/penguins, but mainly for Mechanical.
I am also an avid canister believer for over 20 years (own quite a few FX's still new in the box, currently using SUNSUN's at present)) BUT recently started going back to Sponge filters and HOB's, as I just don't see that I need as much bio as I once believed...
Sometimes (thats a lie, it's MOST OF THE TIME) we make it MORE COMPLICATED THAN IT TRULY NEEDS TO BE...... Overkill is JUST THAT....OVERKILL, unless you're OVERFEEDING, or just want bragging rights, or like me just mechanically inclined, and like cool filters and want to see how well they *might* work compared to others(trying to give this up recently)
Since i've cut back to feeding my 8 tanks once a day, nitrates run much lower, as well as water bill, as I do less water changes (was once a week, now I go two weeks @30-50%)
