Best feeder fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can use the tank for qt, but it is best to avoid than stress yourself with problems later when something happens. You can train them to eat fillets, tawilis (which costs 120 a kilo in our country), SWs, pellets. My best bet though is tawilis.

Qt is a good option, though i would prefer to make a sump bio filer out of that 10 gal, you may need a bigger qt/hospital tank depending on the size of your fishes.

I think the safest and easiest way to care for them is to get them trained on pellets, market shrimp, various frozen or freeze dried products. Make those the staple diet. If they get stuck on only eating feeders, you will have to constantly worry about keeping up with supply and quarantining them.

Keep the 10 gallon or a get another tank to qt some feeders. You are still taking a risk with them, but this way you can occasionally feed them some live fish. In terms of feeders, try to avoid the big box stores. Check on CL, or find a nice mom and pop LFS. I general, they seem to care better for all their fish.

Thanks for the replies! Dont worry, my fish are pellet trained. Too much I think. They seem to like pellets more than frozen bloodworms. Well except for my gar. Before I got him, all he was fed were feeders (usually swordtails and some goldfish). Can I pellet train my gar or something?

Most gar will take to pellet foods ime easily when they are usually at the tail end of their first year.. there is a lot of bad information in this thread in reguards to Gar care and husbandry. I would suggest reading the stickies In the gar/bowfin subforum if you haven't already to help narrow down your choices/ideas.

Gar are Piscevores... meaning they eat fish.. its what they do.. the type and quality is what matters. another great option if you don't want to feed live but give your gar a solid diet ( ime pellets alone make my gar fat.. and fatty liver disease isn't healthy feeding.) Is frozen fish fillets from the market. I've fed a mix of live feeders/frozen fillets/pellets for many years and my gar have never contracted a disease. If you are concerned about this freezing most foods for 4weeks will kill a lot of stuff but not everything. and other foods such as worms have an extreamely low chance of carrying diease.

Make sure whatever you feed is a quality food, be it pellets or live. pellets imo are like vitamins and whole fish are better then fillets.. but fillets fed along with pellets are a great alternative.

Gar are not cichlids or the vast majority of "monster fish" they are specialized hunters. as for your poly mine always did best on a mix of pellets, and nightcrawlers.

lot of people are simply against live foods, and some of us pro. do your research either way you decide. and the sub-forum stickies for more in depth information is a great way to learn more if you haven't found them yet.

Thanks a lot! You are a pro. :D Okay, I'll try feeding him some floating carivore pellets(?) and frozen pangasius (cream dori) fillets that I can buy for just 2$ per 500g. Or would fresh or frozen tilapia be better? I think I can get small ones from the market. Would that be better cause it has all the nutrients from the bones and stuff? Ive only joined here recently and so far Ive learned a lot. Im new to caring for "monster" fish so.. And dont worry I did my research but I dont think I should rely on internet sites that much. Experience from other people is better haha. :) Thanks again!
