I am going to be setting up a new 55 after Christmas and I am pretty set on a skimmer, lights and everything else, but I was wondering what you guys thought the best filter would be for SW. Before I had an emperor and I didn't really think it did all that well for the SW. Any comments welcome. :D

I would do 2 ac110s. If you take out the filter basket and load it up with live rock, it will move the water around well and create a nice source for pods and bacteria to grow. Ive used an AC70 on my 10g SPS tank and I swear by the Hagen powerfilters. Search AC110 fuge mod and you should be able to find a good way to alter it. You can even throw a light over them and add some macroalgae. I'd use one for live rock and macro and the other for chemicals (carbon here and there and chempure)

Sorry if this is a stupid question but is the ac110 an aquaclear filter that hangs in the back of the tank?

Imo, live rock in the tank for your bio filtration and live sand or use new aragonite sand and the live rock will seed it. Then you can use on overflow or drill the tank to drain down to a 20g or 40g long sump tank under the 55g display tank. The water should go thru some sort of filter pad or sock, Then proceed thru chaeto algae first then a protein skimmer and pumped back up to your tank. You can also put your heaters in the sump. I have a koralia powerhead by hydor in the tank to ensure there are no dead spots. If your taking reef you will need even more tank flow like a closed loop or more powerheads.

refugium is going to be the most efficient form of filtration for a REEF tank, however if your not doing corals then start with a sump and build the refugium later. if this is going to be a pred tank, then deff do a sump and a heavy skimmer. if its going to be a reef post what corals you want, and the set of lights that you are set with so we can get an idea. IMO its always best to start after having all your equiptmen setup first and then proceed to adding stock. i have a feeling some people wont agree with this but IMO it doesnt make sense to rely on a refugium when you have a pred tank being most of its filtration is going to be mechanicaly based.

it also helps to do the LR and LS idea with anytank, but even more so in a reef tank. reef tanks need to be very stabile before you add live stock. with pred tank, your going to be skimming so much and removing so much from the water, having LR is going to be a really good idea so you dont lose your biological bacteria everytime you change the filter pab, which by the way will be often no matter what type of SW tank you do.

I do want to have coral in the future but focus mainly on non-pred fish first. I think I like the Aqua C Remora skimmers so far. But I just can't seem to decide on what kind of filter. I am willing to take more time and save up money to set the tank up the best way so that I can keep the coral alive. I just don't know much about refugium's or where to even get them.
