Maybe your right. It just does not change the fact that millions of people succesfully use UGF with no problems. Also under gravel filters provide more surface area for bio than sponge filters. Also who wants to look at two nasty sponges in their tank? Sponge filters have their upsides but honestly I would not want to look at them in a show tank.

I was just trying to reccomend a filter for someone who has a budget of 60 dollars. And as I addressed earlier the sand an AC110 could be an issue if the intake is too low. But I don't know of any canisters with the exception of Jebo that are in his price range.

I like the ebay method maybe you can get a cheap used fluval 304 or something they are good filters.
Millions of people ran UGF, but today the vast majority run HOB. Although you may think your UGF runs without problem, there likely is a problem you just do not test for it. Ignorance is bliss. Foam filters are easy to hide. Most good foam filters have a far larger surface area than UGF, as the UGF relies of the gravel, which is generally epoxy coated, there for nearly the same as a marble, and can easily be channeled, removing a vast majority of the surface area.

So when I took the under gravel plates up after years of use and barely found anything I was hallucinating? I test my water regularly I am not ignorant and I do not appreciate being called so by a moderator. What problem exactly am I not seeing ? My water parameters are perfect. :screwy:
I also never said to run a UGF on its own that would be silly. I run a HOB and a canister and an under gravel filter. Also I have run under gravel filters on my tanks since I was 6 years old. Besides when the power goes out what are you going to do? I just battery power my air pumps and bam I got a bio filter running. Sponge filters are neat and have their place I am not going to argue that.
Not everyone can afford an eheim 2080 and a 2262 like you have. Your filtration would make an undergravel filter unnecessary however for john every man most will need added bio if they are on a budget.
Id like to see you argue with the owner of capitol aquariums my LFS all their tanks run sole under gravel filters and have for 30 years successfully as many people have as well.

PS Which HOB has more bio capacity than a under gravel filter on say a 55 gallon? AC110 ?? No I think not
Secondly I chose non coated gravel as many do when they pursue under gravel filtration so please tell me Whats this ignorant thing that I am missing with all my testing and 16 years of experience with under gravels ?

Calm down. Have you ever tested your phosphates, your tds, or your potassium? I can build a canister with the same capacities as a 2080, for far less than $100. Most HOB filters have a larger capacity to filter than a UGF, as UGFs channel, which makes the majority of their surface area obsolete. Most UGF people have to maintain there tanks far more than most hob filters. You have your opinions and I will not try to change them, but I will educate people when they are willing to leave behind their ego, and learn.

Its over. I am done. A lot of people use under gravels and a lot of people use sponges. Its personal preference. His is different than my own and my experience is great with them and nothing he says can change that. :chillpill:
My only question is what point are you trying to make that you can create a canister as good as the 2080 for 100 dollars. Are you calling your self a fool for paying so much ? What about the 2262 ? Or the fact that your tank is barely stocked don't you think those all contribute to the fact your water is perfectly clean without an under gravel. Sure if I spent 900 dollars on filters I would not need an under gravel either.

RANT OVER I am no longer posting in this thread. SORRY to the OP seriously

I can build a filter that has the same capacities, but not the same capabilities. When looking at filters, there are many factors that are important. From the media to the flow, the design of the movement of water through the media. Not all filters are made equal. My eheims run because they are more efficient, use less energy, and less space. Channeling is why I don't like UGF, or even Ehfisubstrat pro in a sump.

For instance a custom gravity filter with 6 liters of Ehfhisubstrat pro and 450 gph, held in a volume of 3.5 gallons, and a horizontal flow through and a basic foam pre-filter, versus an eheim pro 3 filled with only 6 liters of ehfisubstrat pro running its 450 gph, and its media volume of 3.43... the eheim still wins. The physical stats can be the same, the flow through can even have more surface area, and still not be able to filter the same amount.

UGF do little to nothing. in my opinion theyre a waste of space, $$ and time.
Although they are inferior to many types of filters out there, they are not useless... far from it. However, for the money, you can get better filters IMO.
