For a 55 Gallon, I would certainly suggest a AC110 or a duel of AC70s (if you can swing the extra). You can also go for a pair of penguins/emperors. The key thing to keep in mind is to make sure your strainer/intake is at least 4 inches away from the substrate.
ACs are fine because they can accommodate custom media options (meaning, much much cheaper!).
