Best filter?

a bigger tank will go a long way if you want to keep the goldfish for its whole life. one thing alot of people dont know is goldfish get huge even the fancies.

edit: btw a goldfish can live for 30 years, if well cared for, the oldest is around 40 i think

43 is the oldest on record for goldfish. I've explained in her other thread already goldfish are not an option for a 5g. She'll have to choose another fish or preferably, shrimps and snails.

Sorry missed the 5 gallon part... aqua clear 20 . I run 4 aquaclears and I got one for my mom too and she says it works great. Mine have all performed flawlessly. knock on wood.

AC is good HOB(Hang on back)Filter, the #20 is the max size of tank it is desinged to filter, although most people go higher because alot of filter brands think there filter does more then we think it does :D.. As for the sponges it functions mechanically to remove suspended dirt particles and other debris from your aquarium. It also encourages some settlement of beneficial bacteria to aid biological filtration. The Bio Max balls are made to support a huge colony of beneficial bacteria. These bacteria are vital to your aquarium's water quality as they help de-toxify highly poisonous substances suck as ammonia which is broken down into nitrites and even more bacteria that breaks that down into nitrates which is the least harmful but still can be in large amounts.. AS for the filter floss it does the same thing a sponge or foam insert does, it basically takes the larger particles of debris out of your water and prevents the bigger particles from reaching the small pores of yor biomax which will slow and eventually clog your filter..

oh man... THANKS!!!!!!!!! :headbang2 should i get the filter at the same time as i put the fish in the tank or can i have everything setup and then get the filter about a week later???

oh snap, im sorry i mustve overlooked a number. so goldie would be preferrably in what size? one i mean.

what about a neon tetra? can i fit that in a gallon? cuz i already have the lil tank from years ago some people already said yea... but i for some reason trust u a smidge more :grinno:

You cannot keep a single neon tetra for life in there. A gallon would be better off for bonsai plant decorations.;) If I were you, get a 15g minimum or a 75g for a good start. Lots of options from there. It doesn't hurt to look into Craiglist. You are from Socal. It is notorious for tank deals.

CRAP SORRY I JUST READ UR OTHER POST ABOUT THE FANTAIL GOLDFISH SIZE TANK LOL

ps- LUPIN RULES :grinno:

sweet. as i said i dont have much space.. but im willing to go 15 gallon :D get a fantail and 2 neon tetras..... tho there is debate on whether they can live in the same conditions.... but im trusting it.................

and sweet, im going to browse craigslist while i decide how and what to have for my first "tank" oooh man scary :(:WHOA:

Unfortunately, a 15g is still too small for a fantail or any other goldfish for that matter.:( You could always attempt a community tank with 8 neon tetras, 6 dwarf pencilfish, 3 otos and a honey gourami for a centerpiece if you like.

Lupin is a great guy with excellent advice who truly wants to help you. You seriously can't put a goldfish in a 5 g tank. The only thing you can put in a 5 g is a sinlge Betta. Cardinals/Neon Tetras are schooling fish and it borders on cruel to keep them in groups less than 4-6. You seem very eager to learn and I like that. But you should do a search and find out how to cycle your tank before you get fish. Otherwise the fish will die &/or get very sick. A 30 g tank only takes up 12" x 30" of space. You can put it on cinder blocks and not buy a stand. My fantail Goldfish is 8" NOT counting his tail and he's just over 2 yrs old. He's still growing. So please-wait for a bigger tank. Goldfish are sweet gentle wonderful social fish and I adore them. I'd hate to see one in a 5 gal tank :-(
