Best filtration for a ray tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my buddies rays are thriving.... but I prefer my set up now.... I have 5 times the amount of bio that I had before.... combo seachem matrix eheim substrate pro eheim lava ceramic rings etc... I have increased my water level in the sump... during large water changes I don't have to worry about the balls drying... much more pleased with this... when the other FBFs are added and the last ocean clear the skimmer chamber and the oceanclear will be filled with seachems matrix or substrate pro witch will put my bio through the roof...

I agree on the no petsmart that place is a joke and I would be amazed if they knew what a wetdry was... never seen one in there or petco.... diy one its cheap and you can make it 10x better than any store bought one...

ok thanks everybody, how would I go about making one? How big would the tank have to be that I used for the sump? Whats the best media? Should I use a store bought overflow or make my own? How do I choose the right size pump? Thanks

-Michaela

well what size tank do you have??? I run like 10x turnover with total system capacity of arround 250 gallons.... my sump is a 50 breeder but you could get a rubbermaid container for cheap and do the same... I listed good medias in previous post.... also use the search feature on this forum in the DIY forum there are probally 1000 different threads on it that will answer all your questions..... mag drive.. quiet one are good submersable pumps....

cpr overflows are great I'd buy one of them....

My tank is 162 gallons, I have a 20 gallon long tank that I could use for a sump, would that be ok? Thanks

Looking at the overflow with 1500 GPH, it also gives you an option to buy a pump, but the pump is only $11, could I use that pump? Thanks

Hey hey now..

Petsmart does carry a wet-dry filter, in there pond section.. Laguna brand, run ya about $140. Could make a home-made one for cheaper.. Only 1 PS employee in all of the land that could provide this info though.. :D

I've read and been told Lava rock will only leech contaminants if subjected to the corrosiveness of saltwater.. katfishguy sounds like a good example of non-toxicity, but it could also depend on the quality and pre-existing condition of the lava rock in question..

Too answer all your questions in short; purchase as much bio-media, sump space, overflow GPH, and filtration as your budget could possibly allow. :D

20g is a bit too small I would try atleast 50g sump.. increases water volume too, more surface area possible.. 1500gph looks good, and thats a great price for the pump at that rate too..
