Best fish to breed and make money

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Read the whole thread and maybe i missed it but does he plan on selling locally or is shipping involved as well? That's a beast to deal with in itself.

Clown Loaches lol nah only if you have a huge tank...huge amounts of clown loaches and patience for years.

Best bet would defintly be sting rays however defintly have to do research. If I ever wanted to breed rays it would defintly be with Motoro as they are the easiest rays to keep and breed and easiest to sell imo...but then you can work your way up to leos and thats when the $$$ come in.

However Im no ray breeder lol so I would get in touch with members here who breed rays and see what their set up is like and if any of them help you out the most I would defintly give them one of the pups imo

I've read all the replies and see ppl suggesting big $ fish which would be a good idea except that there is a large overhead associated with these fish. Between the cost if food and heating and space required and how delicate these fish are and the fact that they are so expensive and delicate that you're cutting out most of the population that is keeping fish they there's little to no $ to be made.

I'm going to stay firm on my fist suggestion of high quality koi. No heating, food is cheap, they will thrive in just about any water parameters, they spawn like crazy, and they are cheap enough that just about anyone can afford them.

breed whatever makes your friend happy, if you enjoy doing it then the cash shouldnt matter, overtime you should break even and then turn a profit

I would never in a million years want to push someone away from a community like mfk. But this is very true. Peoples views and opinions towards you are only how you make them. Ignore them and you should be fine if you are affected by it still then there is no other solution than to leave the forum. Im not saying to leave as I find it terrible to repel people from this forum. But those are literally your options. In my opinion and many other people opinions this is one of the best fish keeping forums you can find. We have tens thousands of members willing to reach out and help you in whatever you need and they will normally assist you in anything. Imo this is the best forum on the internet. Its going to be very hard to find a forum equal to this forum.

^^^ + 1 there's a lot of info on MFK and some times peoples opinions or experiences conflict/differ it doesn't make them jerks for expressing it and you've got to be able to roll with the punches. If someone sinks to personal attacks then report them if they're simply giving their opinion or stating a view point you don't agree with either educate them or ignore them but don't get unnecessarily defensive as it serves no purpose other than stifling potentially useful information.

As far as breeding for profit, it's not something that can really be done casually. Consider the suppliers and the vast amounts of fish they either collect or breed in order to make a profit and then think to yourself do you have the ability to fill a niche that they don't where there's a consistent flow of revenue? That means you've got to find a fish that's widely in demand, is priced reasonably and that you can find a market for and sell at a probably lower price than most common LFS's. It's not as easy as it sounds and I'll quote my father here in regards to business ventures I've thrown at him including breeding fish "if it was that easy don't you think everybody would do it?" Perhaps an over simplified statement but none the less true. If it was that easy how many passionate members here would've taken up breeding fish for profit. You'll notice that the few who've become vendors don't breed they import and you should ask yourself why?

With that said if your still going to try and breed I can offer you my opinion on how to be relatively successful. Now many have suggested expensive fish which is all good and well until you realize that people don't always have that kind of dough to throw around all the time so the market will be few and far between which means you'll be sitting on fish often. You'll want to attract a larger audience than serious hobbyists like those on MFK so you'll have a consistent revenue to go along with all the time and expense you'll be putting into breeding. So you'll want to go for something more in demand yet reasonably priced enough that you'll have an appeal to a wide audience and have a more consistent source of revenue. As such you should look at your LFS and see what higher priced fish they carry on a regular and in large quantity. This will help you determine your local market at least if not a general view of the market. You'll notice that probably the best fish to breed are African Cichlids. They're colorful relatively reasonably priced(not all of them but a lot of them are reasonable)and so are attractive to a larger audience than just the extremely dedicated members on MFK and you'll have an easier time marketing them in my opinion. As such they're probably your best bet when breeding on a semi casual basis in my opinion.
