Best fish to breed for money

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
frontosas are very expensive up here in Maine I saw a 1 inch front at my LFS for $30 the other day.

I dont think you can make money breeding fish unless you live in the tropics and breed on an industrial scale in ponds, and are able to ship 1000's at a time.
It is however rewarding as a hobby, but not financially.

Of course, if you somehow breed something that nobody else has seen before and can't breed, such as an electric blue aro, this could definitely bring some serious dough

I never attempted to breed but my Red devils bred and I had hundreds of fry I put in a grow out tank. I sold a lot but have like 100 left and don't know what to do with them. People don't always buy them and I sell locally. I'm not a breeder it just happened one day in a community tank.

Big money I've seen are like special flowerhorns. Range from 100-1,000. But must be a good lineage and the parents will probably cost you around 1k for a really nice pair.

Kois can sell for in the 5 digits

Salmon and trout. Will sell, stores will buy and if not there is supply for breakfast , lunch and dinner :D
BBQ fish is great tasting .

Must have like a pond to breed them?

Kois can sell for in the 5 digits

My fathers been keeping Kois since I was a kid. His fish breed all the time. I mean he has such tiny koi. They look like goldfish at a young age from above but there was maybe 100-200 of them.

You need an established pond and can take a very long time for KOI to breed. My dad finds thousand of eggs in his filter pad every year. Throws them back in his pond so some may survive.

I thought that I will breed African Mbuna Cichlids. Main reason why I chose Mbunas was due to their aggressiveness, the demand will be there to replace the ones that get killed :).

As I looked at the market, heck the supply side of the equation was way way higher, these Mbunas killing rampage can not keep up with what is available for sale.

I believe the key to make money is that you are willing to ship but still I am not sure if there is real money to be made as again, the supply side is still much higher.
