finally got my 180 gallon tank. im going to start cycling it tomorrow and am wondering what the best species of fish are to cycle it with? I need to build up a large bio load in this aquarium because i will be adding 2 rays and multiple other fish to it (obviously not all at once). I was thinking of using convicts?

Try a fishless cycle. No headache in trying to remove something later and not cruel to the fish

Cruelly I would do the same as u say I would get like 10 convicts which near me are $3 each so $30 and I would get a large Oscar as they poop as much as small Children and they would just help in this case and around me a full grown one I have seen for $30 so it would be $60 total for all the fish to cycle and they would be worth more if they grow which they probably will

About a half dozen raw shrimp would work the best.

Ammonia from the hardware store works the best period. You can easily cycle the filter to handle levels of ammonia that would kill any fish.
There is zero reason to cycle any other way.

this is exactly how i cycled my tank. pure ammonia. i did mine to lvls that would have wiped out any fish, and got a strong BB colony, that could handle my rays' output.

there is no reason to harm fish when you can cycle in a more humane way, plus a bottle of pure ammonia is cheaper than all those fish and accomplishes the same thing.

I purposely keep extra filter media and gravel in all of my tanks, so when I set up a new tank there is virtually no cycle that has to happen
