Best fish to help keep (brown) algae down....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Flagtail if fish are large bristlenose pleco for smaller tanks and tank mates. Flagtails get very large 16 inches or so.

How's the bushy nose in terms if producing waste (pooping!) is it as much as the common pleco? If so , the. It's a no go! As for tank size , I have a 180 g but it's stocked already ... Wouldn't want to over stock.. But if I'm swapping a flag tail for a pleco maybe it'll be the same? (What type of flag tail? As there seems to be a couple dif ones) thx so much

I wouldn't say I have noticed a difference, he makes his rounds through all the tanks. I don't mind cleaning the glass but the rocks and other deco is a pain. I have a breeding pair in my 75 I would like to move to my 180 but I'm not sure how that would work with my Galaxy Pleco. He is a beautiful fish but is territorial as hell.

16'?? I thought more like 12". (For flagtails)... I think I may give one a try .. Going to get rid of the pleco today.. Gonna miss the guy but he poops extremely too much ... At 1st I was ok with it, but it's a pain now...

Bushy nose sounds interesting as well but if his waste is in the level of a common pleco, no go!

Thx for the advise and any more is always welcomed!

Most bristlenose plecos max out at about 6" or so and will not create as much waste as common plecos. And yes, flagtails can reach 16". Although it will take many years to reach that size.

16" would be a very old well taken care of specimen. I don't think I've ever come across one this big. Mine was maybe 12-14" and that was in a 750g. 12" is much more common in aquariums. Yellow tails are supposedly a little smaller.

Just put my order in at the LFS for a flag tail and traded in the pleco... Thanks for the advise! Hope this fish works out! May look into a bushy nose too...

He'd (FT) work out fine in my 180g correct ? (Seeing you had 1 in a 750g)

Agreed. The only time I've seen one bigger than 12" or so was at the Baltimore aquarium. Pretty sure this guy was at least 15". Quite a sight to see!

It might be a little cramped for him several years down the road, but it should work. I have one about 9" in my 120 and he's fine.

I don't think you'll find much of a decrease in the amount of waste the flagtail produces compared to the pleco. My flagtail seems to drop turds every couple of minutes. It's the nature of the fish; I've noticed that all grazing species (especially algae eating-type-fish) are constantly dropping turds. But I agree, that they are awesome at keeping brown algae in check. Mine really doesn't touch green algae though.
