The hump in all cichlids, is a water filled sack often temporarily based on alpha status in a group, so genetics is a very important basic factor. If the genes are there to make the sack large, it will be large, if not, thats the profile you get.
It is interesting that in lab experiments, females often don't choose the male with the biggest hump, out of a group, so that is probably not the only determining factor.

Duane has probably forgotten more than you will ever know with regards to keeping cichlids.


And there is no need to keep a FH at 86F, or anywhere near that temp. I kept mine at 78-80F for years, and never had an issue with that temp range. In fact, at higher temps, bacteria flourishes, which is why one often sees warm water diseases such as Flavobacterium columnare aka "duck lips" in FH tanks.
