Best food for oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There's a lot of pellet food on the market these days that is targeted for great growth and color in cichlids. I think that its all just a matter of preference to you and what is available/affordable to you. For me, I use a few different kinds of pellets/stick formulas as well as worms/insects for treats. In my experience though, you should not have any trouble growing an oscar. They eat lots and lots of pretty much anything. Just keep up with the water changes!

I would recommend picking up the new (june) issue of Tropical Fish hobbyist as Scott Michael does an article on food for oscars. ;)

Brian Scott's article in TFH is good. I would add to it that my Oscars have enjoyed fruits, and chopped veggies. Oscars are not carnivores, they are omnivores, just like plecs are omnivores, not herbivores. Your oscar needs some vegetable matter too.

No, the best food is a variety of food. Oscars need more than meat.

they eat anything! but good quality are better! some people feed them crayfish and if the crayfish may be too big they break off the claws! but try and give a big variety along with froxen foods freexe dried!
