I got my first guy in today, he's only about 1/3-1/2" right now and I want this little guy to get the best care and feeding he can. On hand I've got a ton of different foods available right now, but most of them cater to tropical fish, plecos, and bettas, nothing for cichlids other than some Aqueon color enhancing pellets, which are too big for him to eat right now, and I'm not a big fan of the brand. I've heard a lot of people suggest beef heart, but have read negative things about not being easily digested because land mammals have different proteins or whatever. I've also read that color enhancing pellets aren't the greatest to use as a staple but are good to use occasionally. So I'm wondering what you all feed so I can get a better idea of what all I need to buy for him. Please name their staple, treats, what you use to help enhance color, anything. If you could also mention why you feed these that'd be helpful too. Oh, I've also read a lot about water additives like Thai Mineral Pink or something like that, are they useful, when should they be used, how often, do you use them yourself, etc?

smashed shrimps and bloodworms is what I feed my fish.

There will be lots of different ppl and different preerences. But for me don't worry much about dry pellets fish food. That's not important. I can feed any fresh water pellets. But I think about what they would catch and eat in the wild instead of what is available in the LFS. I always include real food nutrition(raw) along with the pellets. Pellets are made to be fish food so I'll use that as supplement for whatever goods they have in them. I do feed pellets but my main foods are not pellets.

So if I were you I won't have a problem

I myself prefer to use pellets/flakes as staples because they provide a much more balanced diet, they have nearly everything the fish needs rolled into one item. And use live/raw/frozen food as a treat a couple times a week.

I follow the pellet as staple technique as well. I'm always seeming to buy all sorts of food and now I have around 5 different pellet/dried shrimp etc. I'm trying to use them all to keep them fresh so I I just mix them all up in a small jar. The rest are in a ziploc in the fridge. Normally I stored the food on top of tank. I placed a thermometer inside and mid day it was over 100 inside from lights. Since then I been using this method so I don't waste food/$$$. To each their own.

My 2cents, for what that's worth.

That's actually a good idea, but with that being said, I'd really like to know what brands and type people are feeding that work best for their FH's. I really want mine to thrive and be colorful as he grows up.

Hi. Welcome.

there are many brands- chingmix, xo humpy head, grand sumo, alife, etc. These brands have had success with flowerhorns, but thats if they have genes. Most of the time, just taking good care of your flowerhorn, having the right water perameters, and just feeding them a variety of food will help them grow. Just make sure they get natural sunlight, not directly. Also, a good staple pellet is new life spectrum. Throw in some color enhancers such as hikari, ching, etc, but not so often. And then the occasional treat of freeze/frozen/live food such as bloodworms, feeder fish, brine shrimp, etc. Watch out for feeder fish though, because they can introduce stuff u dont want in your tank.
