I find that live food helps fishes to grow out faster but on the downside, it could lead to a sooner death too. Thus I agree with the rest that you should use simple prepared food to grow out the birchirs steadily.
Can't beat variety but I've gotten good results with certain pellets.Once I was able to get my normally stubborn and slow growing indo dat onto eating them it soon outgrew the live food eating NGT that it was housed with.
Daily water changes, any high-quality food with adequate protein and some vegetable matter. Earthworms, crickets and peas/algae-based foods are a good start. But the growth will mostly come from the water changes.
I don't know polys well, so if earthworms are not an indicated food, okay.
