Good point, it would be easier. I'm really torn. The thing is I'm getting rid of 3 tanks (55g's) and putting all those fish in the 150. I have a 500gph pump for an overhead filter which I like but won't work right on this tank cause I built it specifically for its tank. So to use the pump I need to makeshift a new filter either way and it may be a good time to explore sumps. Plus the drawer idea seems ultimately convenient as far as maintenance and seems like the best option for dealing with the bio load of the tank. My plan is to have my magnum 350 for mechanical filtration. A DIY hob with a 300gph pump for both mech and bio, and then the sump with the 500 gph pump to handle the entire bioload.

Well, considering an average head loss of 4-5', your 500gph pump is actually moving 250-300gph, which is a pretty good environment for bio IMO considering the assumed width and depth of the drawer system. Since the bottom drawer would be submerged, my goal would be to fill the top drawer with pillow stuffing, the middle drawer with scrubbies, and the last drawer with as much porous media as possible. And I would not add any more filtration unless water parameters dictate.

In one sump, I run 100gph through Matrix for bio and about 500 gph through poly pillow stuffing for mechanical. This is for a 125g with ~150g total system water.

Yes sir that's my plan exactly as far as the sump. Plus I save money using 3/4"PVC over 1". My bios covered with the sump then I just want the 300gph pump and magnum 350 to work on polishing the water.
