When I called and ordered my 5 thats what they told me...no box and no bio max but has the other stuff. He said AC made a huge amount of them like this to sell cheap. And if you look at the pic carefully they have...it shows exactly what you will get. You would have to get 20$ of biomax per filter to make it reach the reg price of them...so since biomax for that filter is probably 5 bucks its still a great deal on the 70's

Ok thanks for the info and link on the deal. I ordered 2 of them today and 2 boxes of biomax for the price of 1. I actually looked at 70's at the lfs today for $75...I just laughed.

Glad I could help...about a year or so ago a website had a code that you put in and it made the 110's like 33$ and I dont remember the others but it was dirt cheap...but these came with everything including biomax...I kick my self for not stocking up but I did print out a shot of the 33$ price on that site and had my petsmart match it 3 times before they changed there policy. 90 filter for 33 :D

With those 70's if you dont run the carbon you can run another sponge or some more biomax. I only run carbon every now and then...keep up on your waterchanges and it should stay clear. You can run it for a day or so after a waterchange to polish it off...and it will help it last.

I would also add a airstone of some sort to the tank. When the tank is full and the powerfilter (any brand) isnt crashing into the water its not doing a good job of taking out the co2...I like airstones with anykind of powerfilter or canister unless its a live plant tank. You could put a nice bubble wall between the 2 powerfilters.

btw - tho I recommend & like AC's a lot, if you have heavier bio load, it is a good idea to DIY & extend the intake tube to the bottom so it can pick up the heavier weighted bio, a tee for double inlet would be even better.

if lite bio then don't need to extend. this is just thru my experience.

I also still recommend 2 ac units for tanks 55g or >

so how did you fare?

Personally I would go for AC110. I had tried canister 350 magnum but find out that the put out flow and power is not what i prefer. the AC110 even tho it is a HOB filter its flow cause a higher disturbance on the gravel which flows the waste to the filter again and get suck up. How ever aside from filters the best filter that i find is sponge filter with a super powerhead. Biologically spongefilter is more preferable. I did some test on my 8ppm ammonia tank and within 2-3days the ammonia level dropped. with in a week it is Oppm. I use smaller grid sponge. this gives more surface area for the bacteria to grow on. and it dose not just grow on the out side. it grows all the way into the sponge. with water going through that much thick sponge it all filters out clean. but it fails mechanically tho lol. so my next setup is a AC110 with a 50 gallon Powerhead and 3inch thick round sponge with small grid. I rise my sponge with tap water. hot tap water and squeeze the sponge. I find no disturbance on the bacteria. put it back on the powerhead and check ammonia level after 2-3rd days. no ammonia or nitrate flucuation. the bigger the sponge the better the biological effect. What I hate most about canister is the cleaning part. they clean water good but when you clean it..it takes more effort to do so.

AC 110 I have four ,remember when I would pay 39.99 a few yrs ago now I do not see them for less than 89.99 anywhere I go. They are the CURrent best Hang on. Media is whatever you need to use.

I think that price was a crazy sale price from dr fosters and smith. I remember that sale...I kick myself for not getting an obscene amount of 110's and 70's.

ill take an emp 400 over ac110 anyday. my vote for hob filter for the emp! :)

I personally like the emperor 400 I've always had issues wit ac's. Wha ever you choose though I would get two one on each side of the tank.

I have two 400's on my 40 and I notice the returns above the bio wheel get clogged often. I take a small wire and clean them out about once a week.
Also I don't think the flow rate matches my aqueon 55. JMO

I have a Emperor 400 and an AC70 on my 55g tank. My take:

The Emperor is by far louder. The impeller makes a continuous grinding noise. However, it works and does a good job of filtering. The output of the Emperor is nicer though, it doesn't pour straight in, rather it hits a little lip. This makes it quieter water noise wise.

The AC70 is far quieter and has more media choices. The only noise on the AC is that the lid vibrates but a simple solution is to put something on top of it.

If I had the choice again I would get two AC70s since it is in my bed room and the grinding noise the Emperor makes is annoying. Plus, two AC70s allow you to clean one filter out and not worry about a mini-cycle.
