Looking to spend around 160 or so on a HoB skimmer. Which is the best one out there? Been looking at the Octopus skimmers but there are a few around that price range, don't really know which one would be the best to get. My tank is a 55g and I don't have a sump, currently have a Rena XP2 filter, but I'm looking to get rid of that and use skimmer/live rock for filtration. Thanks for any help!

I have two super skimmer's 125 for both my 55 qt tanks. A little mod to the impellar and output and you're in business. I've also heard that the remora's are pretty good but I couldn't tell you from personal experience.

My favorite skimmers and the best ones for complete rookies without a doubt in my mind are the ones made by AquaC. The remora is a hang-on tank skimmer with spray injection (A non-adjustable, however fool proof method).

This means you will have consistent, long term performance without having to do much in the way of adjustments or cleaning, while still getting great skimmate. I would look into them. Plus one for your tank size would be just a little more ($174 on amazon.com when I bought mine) than you are looking to spend.

+1 on that

ALthough I've never used or owned a AquaC, I read a TON of great reviews. I was looking into buying one, but shipping cost up into Canada (and I live 350 miles north of Montanna) made it very expense for me.

Good thing you won't have those extra costs

Thanks for the input guys I think I will go with the Remora and it's not that much more than I was looking to spend. Greatly appreciate it!

350 miles north of Montana? Have much in the way of hunting? I might need to check out your reef in person. :D

When I saw your price range I thought you would find that a perfect match. Please let us know what you think of it once you get it and some experience with the company and your skimmer. Always good to have more reviews.

.

Not much, just: white-tail, mule deer, moose, elk, antelope, ducks, geese, coyotes, wolf, bear, and the rest I don’t bother with. There not too much store bought meet in our freezer.

Pack a warm coat

Let me give you an idea of what we have here in Wisconsin.

White tail.

Honestly there is also coyote and bear...but you have to wait 4-8 years for a bear (Im probably about 6 years away at this point), and I dont shoot coyotes cause you cant eat them. But not too much store bought meat here either, but most of that is from spearfishing. And I didnt get to do as much of that this past summer as I should have.

Warm coat is not an issue. Late season whitetail in wisco can take us as low as -40. Last time I went out like that it only lasted 2 1/2 hours though...I came in when my handwarmers froze. :D

+1 on the AquaC Remora. I have the "Pro" version on my tank and I have no complaints. I picked mine up used through a local reef club.

My AquaC Remora Pro HOB skimmer works great! And the customer service is top notch! Jason Kim, the owner of the company sometimes answers the phone. He was very pleasant. I needed a new O-ring (it adjusts the height of the collection cup) and he quickly got it to me. O-rings including shipping are free by the way, the company doesn't charge for it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
