best live food to breed?

try marbled crayfish or marmorkrebs. They are manmade and self cloning(no males in the species). You just start with one and a few months later are rewarded by 50+ 1-2" young. If you were to let a few of thos live long enough to reproduce, then you have yourself a colony/never ending supply in around a year.

just one condition DON"T LET IT GET OUT

What size tank would you recommend using for this? Could I do it in a 10 or a 20g? And do substrate/fake plants/hiding places matter at all?

Im not breed any kind of shrimp as I buy whole frozen shrimps from the grocery store for the big fish, so I wanted to breed some type of fish that I can gut pack with healthy foods then toss I n the big tank for the big fish. But after reading the last convict thing im think im just going to stick with mollies. My lfs has multiple tanks with different sizes and kinds, I can probably get some that are already breeding or already knocked up lol.

I have a pair of convict cichlids that I bought about 2 weeks ago. I already have about 80 fry that are entering the free swimming stage. My plan is to use the babies as feeders for my piranhas when they are about a month to two months old. These fish are some of the most entertaining and loving fish I have had and will be hard to be made feeders. Maybe Ill keep the cute ones..lol

My advice would be convicts. I got the largest pair I could find from my lfs(male 2.5 inches and female 1.5 inch) since usually fish stores do not sell adult ones. You wont be dissappointed.

I used to have several 3 inch female guppies. The biggest I called grandma guppy. She lived to the age of 5 years but passed away about 3months ago:(. I have since given mine away.

I agree with marble crayfish (if they are legal in your area)... best food source possible, and all you need is 1 to start with if your patient and not in a rush... not to mention with a tank that size, add a bunch of driftwood in there and maybe a few fake plants which are tight knit (for fry) you should have a good colony to feed your fish in no time...
