In the UK Nandopsis haitiensus is often sold as a "dinosaur" fish, it is thought to be one of the most primitive of the new world cichlids, a fossil was found in Hispaniola probably dating back to the Pleistocene era, closely resembling the N haitiensus, but called Cichlasoma woodringi. It is thought that because its island isolation, it has remained unchanged for a very long time, and may be the ancestor of all the preditory new world cichlids, such as Parachromis.
