BEST MEDIA AVALIABLE!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Denitrification can take place outside of slow flow reactors, otherwise live rock in a marine tank wouldn't work. Seachem Matrix works the same way live rock does. Although there is too much flow to allow for denitrification at the surface, the pores and channels inside the rock itself is where anaerobic conditions can develop and allow for denitrifcation.

I have talked to multiple people who have noticed that their nitrate concentration tends to run lower after switching to Seachem Matrix. It has happened in the real world, not just supposedly in Seachem's lab.

I agree that Seachem Matrix is the best option for a biomedia. for the sake of argument and to appease the skeptics, let's assume that Seachem is wrong about the denitrification and that everyone who thinks it happened to them is just wrong. Matrix still has more bioavailable surface area than Eheim's or Fluval's. That alone is reason to go with it.

I run multiple wet dry sumps on all my systems. All my systems use only seachem matrix / pond matrix as bio media. All my systems consistently have low nitrate readings from several different brand test kits. Previous to the use of matrix with the use of other media, I would get the normal high nitrate situations that I would have to do multiple water changes weekly on the tanks to try keep nitrate levels in check. You would think wet dry sumps create too much oxygen for anaerobic bacteria to colonize but it's the deep internal pore structure of the media where they do, not the outside like you your normal nitrifying bacteria. 1/3- 1/4 of my media is submerged and the flow rate of the pumps are around 2-3 x turnover.

Seachem pond / matrix media in Australia can be purchased for around $9 per litre if opt for the 20 litre size.

After reading all this useful info. I'm gonna order me some seachem matrix for both my fx5. Question is, should i go with the regular seachem matrix or the pond version as the size of the bio-media is bigger?

The regular matrix is fine for the fx5 baskets, plus it compacts better meaning you will fit more matrix per volume in the baskets than the pond matrix.

Sure you could. Why not. Would it be effective? I doubt it.

Pumice would be effective but many other things are more effective that are pretty inexpensive.
