For me I would say GATF cause it can stay in 180 for over a year, and I can use that time to think what I gonna do next, might be a bigger tank or start building a pond, If you gonna build a pond I would look into Gars and Red Tail Catfish.

I was really considering getting one but I've never kept a GATF, only a vittatus. What growth rates do they have?

I don't have a lot experiences with GATF above 15 inches, I got my GATF at 4 inches and keep it in 150G for a year and then I sold it 15 inches so around 1 inch per month more or less, I fed it live gut loaded (quarantined) feeders only.

Okay and in your opinion are they fun fish to keep? I heard they are very fragile and any disruption of their surroundings such as water params or temp can kill them? How hardy are they in your opinion? I have an opportunity to get one at $225 for a 5.5-6" one. Is that a good price? My main concern is that something will go wrong in my tank and it'll die. Did you have a strong current in your tank? Thanks a lot.

Strong current is the key to keep it calm (not completely calm it down but less head/face slam into the tank glass), if you have right setup then its hardy fish and of course you will love it along with its progression. The main reason I sold mine is tank size and space, I can't have a tank that bigger than 150G. About the price tag it's all depend from LFS to other area LFS, I got mine for $125 but that 18 months ago and I knew and got very well relationship with all my fish stores within 25 miles radius from my house. Oh, for the water flow I got over 10k GPH in my 150G...it's a hurricane going in there but it's nothing for my GATF and its love it :P

PS: Setup your tank at least 6 weeks before adding any fishes. I'm usually setupa newtank and got some feeders in there for few months before I add my favorite fish (while waiting I use that time to research and decide which fish I'm gonna get :P it's a long term hobby so no need to rush then fail and quit)

I've never kept any real monsters. But from what I've read it seems like not much can compete with piranhas.

Except for maybe Aimara, Armatus, and Dorado....... All enjoy Pirahna as a main source of FOOD.

I can't believe on the subject of best monsters none of the above have been mentioned, especially in an Amazonian discussion. WTF is going on here? lol
