Best oscar tankmates? Cichlids, not community.

Lots of choices here:

I would say that a general guidelines to follow when looking for Oscar tank mates are fairly simple: Make sure that you buy something big enough not to get swallowed, O's are definitely opportunistic eaters. Also, stay away from overly aggressive fish; Oscars are the pussy cats of the cichlid world, they act tough but in a real fight they can't really hold their own, even against a fish half their size that has a real attitude.

How many fish do you want to keep in total?

In a 125 you are open to lots of options but if you know that you want say a dozen fish vs. four or five, then some suggestions would be better than others. :)

I currently house/have previously housed the following cichlids with my Oscar pair (intended for life):

Blue Acara, Rotkeil Severum, Turquoise Severum, True Parrot, Fire-Mouth, Nicaraguan, Texas (not sure about her yet shes still young), Red Hump Geo, Angel Fish (not sure I'd recommend it, they had to be separated but are now back together) as well as a Convict (RIP Casey)

I'll be adding a Jack Dempsey (never thought I'd add a Jack because of their known attitudes) to the mix here in the next month or two and just like the rest of my cichlids, along with the dithers and other non cichlid tank mates I have, it will be a game of trial and error. Hopefully all will be well but we'll see :D

I know that you stated you were just looking for cichlids only but I would definitely suggest adding some type of dither, to avoid excess aggression as well as to coax your cichlids into swimming around a bit more. For dithers, I'd always suggest Silver Dollars, you've got the space and they make excellent rodeo clowns.

Keep us updated and make sure to post some pics!
