I just got a 55 gallon aqueon aquarium. I'm planning on drilling it for a sump. I was wanting to use the bean animal setup. I'm not sure if it'd take up too much room in the tank though. What do you guys think? What are some suggestions for a good setup? I want it to be quiet and don't want to worry about overflowing risk. Thanks.

I guess none of the people that say to use sumps, because they're better don't actually know that much about them. I guess I'll figure it out myself.

There are so many over flow designs not everyone memorizes them by name. If you are talking about a lower overflow pipe with a valve to balance the flow with your pump and a higher pipe run full open for emergency overflow... I like that design myself.

just got with a hob or canister thats alot of work making a sump for such a small tank , a waste in my opinion

Lots of looks, means an interest, but I think most are looking for answers.
Just like yourself, drilling/sump, is a step most want a bunch of info before doing.
Personal preference, I really like a bottom drilling for my drain line and a top drilling for return.
If it were my tank, I would go with an 1 1/2 drain running into a 20L, or bigger for my sump.
A 55g can get a big benefit with the added water volume of a sump.
Heck, most all smallish tanks do.
Wet/Dry ,socked, or drip plates covered by foam, I`ve run-em-all.
They all had a plus and minus to them.
Honestly, I couldn`t see any difference in performance between the bunch.
After a couple of sumps, I spent allot more time on ease of service and adaptability of media than any other part.
How you configure your sump is a pretty big deal since you are going to drill, making the getting water to the sump easy.
As to gurgle-n-slurp busters, some work better than others and really couldn`t steer you towards any on particular style over the others.
You`ll just have to do your reading, pick one and try it.
Big step, for sure, but by drilling you are already way ahead of most.
Good luck with it.

I have a 210 and 92 gallon aquarium, but I still don't consider a 55 that small. I think it's only a waste if you're too lazy to put forth the effort to do it. I guess for me the pride of learning and trying something new far out weighs the effort involved.

Thanks for the advice. The tank is tempered on the bottom, so I'll have to drill the back. I think I'm going to use the bean animal design that has 3 holes. One hole is a full syphon, one durso style, and an emergency to keep the tank from overflowing if the others get clogged. I'll have to make a little overflow box as well. I'm really looking forward to setting this up. I hope to use what I learn on bigger tanks in the future.
