I just went to the Natick Petco and I found tons of rare fish. Here's a list:
Salvini cichlids (I bought 2)
Blue acaras (not the electric blue ones but rather the natural ones)
Hillstream Loaches
Bumblebee catfish
Large angelfish.

Comment below if you've seen petcos with great selections.

One by me has a pretty good selection. Plecos, sals, common blue acaras, geos, saw an ornate bichir and a banded lep, pretty good sw selection too. Health of fish is no better than any petco though.

The condition of fish in any LFS depends largely on the knowledge and skill of the employees assigned to care for them.
The mom & pop stores in my area have all but dissapeared, leaving me to shop at a very good Petco located 25 miles away.
I've bought quite a few fish there. Haven't had any health issues & they special order. The Petco also carries
NLS foods, which is rarely found in my area.

Wouldn't call those fish rare, but yea there are some good Petco's out there. Depends on the staff, some stores have nobody who knows the first thing about fish, and others have hobbyists working there. I used to be the aquatic manager at a petco location in washington DC. I trained a couple of the kids well and turned the section around completely, guy I took over from knew nothing and gave bad advice. Petco gives you the option to get more rare fish depending on your aquatic sales- sell a ton and you can order higher tier fish. So the better stores have access to a wider range of fish.

For the freshwater I suppose it is not as much rare as it is uncommon for a petco. Typically big box don’t have much more than assorted community fish and some common cichlids. You have to go online or to an exotic lfs shop for most cool stuff. So even something we regard as basic here is unheard of for most petcos/petsmarts.
As I’ve said many times in these discussions, take a look through this PETCO website. It has an insane stock for fish! So many saltwater! But most of them aren’t in the best condition.
Agree on the poor condition. Once you learn all the diseases and how bad petcos can be, turns out everything is crawling with it. The saltwater makes me want to puke. Ich, brook, velvet all over the place with a boatload of bleached corals and nems.
The selection is pretty good though. Not as uncommon as my lfs, but I can count on most petcos having some harder to get stuff (helps when you own Liveaquaria). And the prices at petcos are (comparatively) dirt cheap. I think the yasha goby I saw was 50 dollars...

The Natick Petco is ok- they bring in fish from different distributors than the small stores.
check out the one on needham st. Their fish manager brings in fun stuff- and they are a magnet store.
