Best Plant to breakdown nitrates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From what I hear, either loads of bamboo, but expensive, or the cheaper more common route pothos

I would say Waterlettuce. they have very long roots that suck act like biological filters. but Something like hornwort will do good and its dirt cheap

Algae Haha, don't know why people hate algae so much , i guess it because of looks

X2 Duckweed, in general the faster the plant grows the better it is at consuming nitrates

You can try having a small screen of algae in your filter with some light on it, i heard that works well for nitrates

Most plants that you will find in the stores are floating versions. They are usually very cheap, and grow quite quickly.

Also M8 some advice, look into deep sand beds in your sump if you dont have one already, they are awesome for taking nitrates out etc.

I would use anacharis. All these other plants need some light. Hornwort needs light too. Pothos can handle the no light situation, I know java fern and anubias can handle a no light situation too but they grow really slow. The slower growing the less uptake of nutrients. You want something that grows fast.

Also, if you can get a plant called Parrots feather that grows fast and sucks lots of nutrients and is not a fussy plant. Can grow in all kinds of poor conditions. I keep some in my pond and native fish tank.
