i dont know much about polisher filters for that crystal clear look... all i know of is carbon (have to replace every few weeks) and a de filter.. i really dont want to buy a whole new canister filter... is there anything out there that i could maybe use after my filter socks that would work? also i know UV is good for killing some parasites and floating algea witch will clear the water a little bit but is it considered a "polisher"?

^ This. You could even get 1 micron filter socks. If that won't do it, nothing will. I run 25 micron socks in my sump.

my water is usually very clear. i just am a little picky about my filtration and tank and im always looking to upgrade.. i usually do waterchanges once a week but if i let it go 2 weeks my water will be a little "off color" probably from my driftwood. just wondering if there was another filter stage ppl were using after thier filter socks without getting a diatom filter or DE filter ect

Yeah, naturally you'd have to change them more often. The smaller the micron rating, the more they filter, they clearer water you get, the quicker they clog, and the more you have to change them. Diatom filters can filter down to 1 micron and therefore clog very rapidly. 25 micron socks is a good compromise. At first they will clog really fast. Over time though, as you slowly remove all the particles from your system, the cleaning intervals will get longer.

25 micron socks and Purigen is what I use. Purigen works like carbon, but has none of the side effects and can be recharged pretty much for ever. I have some in my 90 that's probably 5 years old and still works great. As good as any diatom filter I've tried and pretty cost effective. I have tons of wood in a few of my tanks and it keeps the tannins in check.

^ That's what the washing machine is for :) Heavy cycle, no soap, no bleach. Come out good as new.
