best polisher for sump?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
25 micron socks and Purigen is what I use. Purigen works like carbon, but has none of the side effects and can be recharged pretty much for ever. I have some in my 90 that's probably 5 years old and still works great. As good as any diatom filter I've tried and pretty cost effective. I have tons of wood in a few of my tanks and it keeps the tannins in check.

I have never heard of purigen? Would you use it the same as carbon? Just out it in a net/screen and throw it in the sump? And how do you recharge it and how often do you need to recharge it

My wife would kill me if she caught me throwing dirty filter socks in the washer lol. Do you guys spray them off with the hose first or just throw the dirty socks right in the washer?
I know they will be catching more waste but that also means they clog faster Hah. Its almost winter here and that means I want to clean as little of socks as possible. ( I hand wash with the hose )

Nope, straight in the washer. Not like it gets the washer dirty. That's what the rinse cycle is for :)

You sure its not just a turnover problem?

I dont have experience with sumps but you can't beat the $10 massive roll of big al's filter floss, try putting a bunch of that in there somehow?

i use polyfiber pillow, you can get a bunch of it and it's dirt cheap.

I use it in the cheap Lees brand mesh bags you find at petsmart, then throw it in the sump. On tanks with canisters, I throw it inside. Charges with bleach and I recharge it about every 5-6 weeks. Really works well for me.

I have used quilt batting from walmart (I would imagine its very similar) and it was awesome, no washing and very cheap but I don't think it caught the small particles that im after...

Puritan sounds like what im after, do you get it local or have to order it? Im guessing the bleach eats what gets clogged into the pours?
