Does this sand have any chemicals/other stuff in it that's not safe for fish? Or can I do the good ol' rinse and it'll be alright?

It's fine. I use it in all my tanks. Fish dig in it, eat off it and breed like crazy. It's just sand.

I get Black Diamond Blasting Sand (BDBS) . Just get the medium-grain (not fine) and wash in a bucket. I love the look in my tank though I mixed some play sand and pebbles to look more natural.

that stuff has metal and all kind of oil in it, i would NOT use blasting sand. been there, done that not a fan plus it's too dark and fish don't look great over it.

No chemicals to be concerned about (HTH Pool Filter Sand). Minimum rinse needed- It comes fairly clean out of the bag. I do rinse it prior to using but no big effort.
