I'm gonna setup several 20 or 30 gal. tanks. Whatever I can get my hands on.

My plan is after the fish breed, remove the parents and growout the fry. I would like to kinda have a chain going with growing the fry in a couple of tanks and have the parents in the next tank. When the first bunch of fry are ready to sale then maybe if timing is right the parents will be ready to go in the first tank again. MAKE SENSE???? I'm breeding geos by the way.

I'm just trying to figure out the best setup and how I would setup filtration. I would like to have all tanks with the same water if possible. So I don't have to test EVERY tanks parameters. STILL WITH ME??

ANYONE who has setup a multi-tank system or has a somewhat hassle free breeding setup then please get me started.

I'm usually pretty creative but just have trouble getting my feet wet!

Thanks in advance!!!

Jamie

Depends alot on what species we are talkin about, but sponge filters and no substrate is pretty standard. In many cases its better to move the eggs or fry and leave the parents, sometimes proven breeders will"shut down" when moved.

I would remove the fry, not the parents. Also, don't strip. Wait until they spit the fry out before collecting them.

For filtration, it depends on how many tanks your having, before we can give you an estimate size for a sump. I'm looking foward to watching this thread, keep me updated, I'd love to help.

for the filter you can put over flows on each tank. that go to a central sump and then have the return go into each tank. that way its all the same water and the same temp. a friend and i just made something like this. ill most likely start a thread about it.

More ideas people!!!

Didn't cross my mind about disease possibly being a problem.

Well, keep the ideas coming. Maybe some websites with detailed info or pics to get some ideas.

One day I hope to be a steady supplier of SEVERAL types of Geos and will add to my stock as people request their favorites.

I know, jumping the gun.

I've been on sooooo many sites lately that I can't remember how I found it. Anyway, this setup is great but way out of my league at the moment.

You are not jumping the gun. In a short amount of time, home breeders will be gods in this hobby! The link you posted is where I want to be eventually. I have "kept" fish all my life. But now we have UNLIMITED knowledge and hands on help to take our dreams to the stars. I did as much reading in public libraries as I could, and it just does not compare to the pros on fish forums. I am inspired every day by something I see.....Today, it is this thread......

Thanks Bigspizz!

There's not a day go by that I don't think about how to get one step closer to where I want to be.

I was offered a trip to another country the other day to go and collect any type of wilds we can get our hands on, but money was an issue for me. Boy did I want to go!!! AARRRRGGH!!!!!

Anyway, I'm just having trouble finding some nice F0 or F1 of the type of fish I want to start with. Hoping the man going on the trip can bring back some of what I'm looking for. Thats why I'm trying to get the breeding tanks up and going.

Bigspizz, where u live?

I do quite a bit of breeding and have found I need approx 3 tmes the growout space as I need breeding space. You also need a small seperate (sterile) hatching area since many breeders hatch artificially. The resaon you need more growout space is there are more juveniles than broodstock kept for longer periods and fish need to be grown in stages which may require special foods or size sorting for optimum growth and to reduce predation.

I would recommend an auto drip water change on growout with a central bio filter since all your fish will be home grown so introduced diseases will be minimal. I also recommend a large airpump and individual sponge or box filters since this is very cheap backup filtration for great peace of mind. Depending on the growout phase, your water change scheme will vary. Sometimes I need to lower the water level to concentrate food and as fry get bigger, I can raise water level to increase water volume. I would recommend you visit some fishrooms and enthusiastic large scale fish keepers to glean ideas such as quarrantine tanks, food tips, broodstock conditioning, etc.

Sponge filters with a linear air pump or regenerative blower or powerheads running them. For disease prevention, you don't want a central system. Individual tanks with filtration would be best.

I have to go along with this recomendation. This is how we have everything set up and it works very well. I'd stay away from the powerheads however because of the potential danger to fry. The air driven units work great.

Another problem with a centralized system is that you can't adjust the temperiture or control medication, if necessary, in the individual tanks.

At times it's necessary to make several large water changes and raise the temperiture to convince some of the more stubbern species to spawn. That's a LOT easier to do with individual systems.
