I bought a 40 gallon tank already established with live rock, live sand, fish, starfish, etc. well pretty much everything except a stand and a light.

in the next several months i plan on upgrading to a larger tank.
number 1, can i use the water from my already maintained tank and just add more in the new tank or do i have to establish the new one all over again.

number 2, i would like to turn it into a reef tank. what would be the best lighting to use that wouldnt cost an arm and a leg?

1.. yes but it's the filter media and live rock that determines if it has to re-cycle or not

2.. it depends on the type of coral and the size of the tank

if you moved everything over to the new tank you may see a *small* ammonia spike just from disturbing everything.. but nothing major/fatal

the sun!

ok thank you.

what do you think about lunar lights? people have told me that they are the best but sooo expensive!

lunar lights are just 2-3 blue LEDs.. it shouldn't be more than like $60 for a strip of them... ever....

is it JUSt LED lights?

or is it like PC's with LEDs?

no its the whole lighting system, not the lights itself. the tank didnt have a hood or i would just use the different marine lights they sell seperate. but what is the best lighting for reefs?
