best source of light?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
whole lighting system... ok but what type of light..

a whole halide lighting system..?
a whole PC lighting system..?
a whole T5 system..?

if it's a complete set up and it's not a POS.. then 250 could be reasonable (again size is important.. a 24" light will cost alot less than a 72")

im not exactaly sure what it is. i just saw the light and saw the price and kind of shyed away. but if it is the best choice then i would be willing to pay a good amount to make my tank look its best

if it's a halide go for it.. at $250 even a 24" unit would be a good catch

(you still have yet to mention how large a tank this all is)

Also depends on what you want to keep. If want to keep soft coral like mushrooms and some polyps or fish only, PC and T5's work fine. If you want to do a fancy reef with stony coral, etc - then your best bet is to go with Metal Halides.

Keep in mind also that MH lights use up a lot more electricity and also generates a lot of heat.

a 4-8* bulb T5 with individual reflectors will do just as good a job as halides, without the waste heat and spending less energy

* tank size pending... lol

haha i havent decided on what size tank yet. either a 65 or 75. whatever i can find a good deal on.

so a 36" or 48"

i don't know what prices are like in ohio.. but if it's the 48" light.. $250 is an OKish deal..

yea im pretty sure it is a 48". i might look on ebay and see if they have one for cheaper. im just afraid of getting ripped off

you can cross check prices with the Aquatic Eco's online store (www.aquaticeco.com). They have fair prices for all types of lighting set ups which would give you a good idea of cost to compare with.

What type of lights to use will depend on what corals or inverts you plan on keeping. You can always save money and still have great lighting by buying retro fit kits. Look into T5 retro kits with individual reflectors.
