What is the best type of lense for taking pictures of fish? Should I get a macro lense? A wide angle? Zoom? I really have no clue. Chaitika if you read this thread I would love to know what kind you use. Thanks for the help guys. I would also like the lense to be able to take everyday pics as well

Lowest F stop you can afford and you don't really need zoom depending on the camera. And you shouldn't really use zoom as it raises the F stop, which lowers shutter speed, which can make your picture blurry. Most of the time you should be able to crop the pic without much loss if any in quality.

A prime lens And a SPEED LIGHT, a zoom lens and A SPEED LIGHT, macro (eh.....). A speed light will help take picture of your fish 100x better then with out a speed light. IME/IMO it doesn't matter what lens you use, it's how you use it. I can take a picture with my expansive lens and take a picture with a kit lens and both of them come out the same. There is little differences when compared to each other, but if you know what to look for you'll notice the differences.

What camera do you have? I can kinda give you pointers on Nikon cameras and lenses. I have four lenses that I keep in my bag.
But a 55-200mm would cover a daily session.

I have a cannon rebel xti. And I have looked at that forum. I got some useful info over there. The forum is just kinda slow. Figured I would ask over here. I am going to buy a new lense from best buy here pretty soon so just wondering what it should be

For fish/tank shots a speed light should be your next purchase, But, a prime lens or any zoom would work.

Personally, I prefer to use my macro lens on my fish, mainly because they're tiny.

Chinook has a very good point, lighting is everything.

that's only true with cheap kit lenses. my 70-200 f/2.8 can maintain a constant f/2.8 aperture all the way out to 200mm. thats why it's so big and expensive :)

i agree with hayn. a Speedlight will give you better pics than a prime or macro lens. a fast prime is good if you dont have a speedlight, like the 50mm f/1.8. but image quality and depth of field at f/1.8 is not ideal for fish photography. i normally shoot at f/11-f/16, and you dont need a prime or a macro lens for this. that's why i say f/1.8 or other fast lenses arent needed.

a speedlight will be a better purchase. a good prime or macro lens may have a faster auto-focus systems and result in slightly sharper pics, but dont expect great results w/o a speedlight (actually, multiple speedlights), it just isnt gonna happen.
